My deepest sympathy’s to the Howse family. Bird was a true and rare gem. It was a year ago when she reached out to me to have a get together with the gang. Unfortunately, I was unable to make that date with the intention of getting together in April. If only I could turn back time. Whenever I had the pleasure of being with Bird, we laughed most times until our stomachs ached. There were many shenanigans that took place, and boy, did we have fun. Bird, thank you for all those memories. The world would be a better place if we had more people like you. Heaven has now given you wings. Fly instead of driving, crank the tunes and my garden is ready for a visit any time.

Bridget had me when she described her brownie outfit in grade 2 as being "sh!t brown". I knew then, this is my kinda gal. Fast friends we became. And there we remained.
Bridget was steadfast and true. To her family. To her friends. But most importantly, to herself. And its this steadfastness that drew so many to her. She was that magnetic.
Bridget’s extended family is enormous (Howse & Buttinger lines) and I had the pleasure, over the years, to have met many of them. What I found overwhelming at times, was that Bridget would introduce me to someone who was a cousin. When I would ask how they were related, the relation would be so distant, how she would have been able to describe the relation made me dizzy. Suffice to say, it didn’t matter to Bird how distant the relation, it was family. If you were a 4th cousin, twice removed, you were blood...her love came to you, whether you were prepared for it or not! Its by this connection, she had pride and nothing, absolutely nothing could penetrate it. Know this, she loved you hard...with every fibre of her being...she loved her family.
Its with this level of devotion that she carried through life meeting friends and maintaining those relationships with great ease. Bridget had the gift of gifting…small things…but meaningful as she usually sought trinkets with well intended meanings. She had a knack for finding sayings that meant something, words that she may not have said, but if she could, she would. Bridget wasn’t one for emotions but was sentimental to the core. Where she lacked in saying it, she supplemented in gestures, good deeds and smiles that made those blue eyes twinkle.
Bridget was protective…a mother hen. She was also a skilled mediator. One occasion, many of us can recall, was at the hotel and a fight was moments away from starting. While most of us were trying to get out and away and as were looking to find Bridget, there she was, right smack in the middle telling both parties to settle down. Just as the punches were being swung, her rescue came via a pull by her jacket and up she went, over a pool table and out the door. We were just as loyal and devoted. When we saw imminent danger to our gal, despite her good intentions, nothing was going to hurt our Bird.
Bridget could predict the future. One night while leaving the hotel, us gals with our leather jackets on (the 90s blessed us all with super fashion), while crossing the street, Bridget said, keep your heads down, we’re going to get pulled over. We all asked why…because we’re wearing leather. We dove into the car, Bridget behind the wheel. We didn’t leave the curb…the police had pulled up alongside.
Bridget was an excellent driver. She was the best cruiser ever and she was best suited for automatic transmissions. I say this because often, while a good song would be playing, she’d hit the gas, and then with her right hand, pretend she was shifting. We always laughed about this. To watch this, one might think manual shifting occurred in figure 8s, instead of Hs.
Bridget had a stealth memory. She resolved many disputes about circumstances, about what happened when and with who. With vivid detail she could recollect all the whos, wheres, whys and even the song that may have been playing. She had this uncanny ability to remember dates, birthdays, phone numbers, anniversaries…of everyone she was connected to. If she knew anything about you, she likely impressed you!
As a side note regarding Bridget’s long memory and devoted affection, at a recent gathering while talking about someone whom she had a crush on, in his presence, she remarked, with a firm and rather frank tone, that she had loved this particular man for 48 years, 2 months and 18 days! This affirmation brought the house down. Each and every one of us had a very difficult time recuperating from that one!
She liked nicknames and speaking in code. Knowing Bridget, came with adapting short forms or terms to reference either a person, place or thing. She had a way of saying hello to those special to her; Hey Ho, Hey Woman, Hey Cyounexttuesday. If she called you by name, she was being formal and professional. If she didn’t, you knew you stood in good faith with her. CW is also one of those terms that reference a specific individual who was not in good standing with her or any of us for that matter. CW, if you’re around, I’d be watching what you drive, our gal has an in with being highly energetic and invisible.
At times, Bridget lacked grace. Events that come to mind that can help me explain this seem often to involve wearing a dress. At Brenda and Norm’s wedding, upon walking across a parking lot. Bird slipped. So did her shoe. Across the parking lot. Made of ice. So here we are, three gussied up 21 year olds swearing and cursing at a church, in the dark, trying to rescue a shoe under a car, laughing so hard until we realized the wedding was starting. The music started and through a wee window of the church, we see the bride making her way to the aisle. Seconds into this, and having a brief discussion about etiquette and if it’s a bad thing to walk into the wedding after the bride Bridget says, “Jammers for a drink until the reception?” Off we went.
And then there was the time, Bridget was Carol’s bridesmaid. It was suggested that she invest in a girdle. Like brave soldiers, Cindy and I took her shopping. I think Cindy lost the coin toss on who was going to helping Bird in the change room. Lingerie shops are typically quiet. It wouldn’t be often one would hear from the change room “this ain’t no f*cking XL”. I rest my case.
Technology grew on Bird. It wasn’t until the past year or so that she gave up her flip phone for a more modern one. And then she dabbled on social media by joining Facebook. Pleased a punch many of us were!
Bridget was always welcoming and inclusive. She enjoyed meeting new people and always included newcomers to whatever activity was going on. As we grew up and moved through our lives, she always, always, always kept in touch with her buddies. When I moved back to the area, we instituted a “hens’ review”. Always a night filled with food, drink, music and gut-wrenching laughter… often involving re-enactments of times long gone by.
Bridget understood my need to move about as I pursued some career endeavours. Never once questioning this pursuit, she just understood and accepted and knowing full well that I’d return one day. I am awfully glad I did.
Growing older, conversations went from when’s the next beerfest, wedding or party, to births, deaths and doctor follow ups..showing concern for others before her own. Never showing worry or anxiety about herself. Selfless acts some might say, but that was our Bridget. Unwavering devotion to those she loved without expectation that anyone return the gesture.
As we move through the grieving process, I think its very important that we remember Bridget, in the purest form we know. As sentimental and kind Bridget was, she was also as tough as nails. As you wade through and find your eyes swollen with tears, she will send you a memory, not for her sake, but for yours. As she told some of us a few times, she will haunt us if we were to remain in neutral. Rest assured she is not in pain, she is not sitting in a chair feeling pity, she’s at the beerfest, surrounded by all those who have left before her. She’s not waiting for us. She knows our day will come. She would want you to do your best and continue her traditions of cruising, singing, laughing and loving. She would want us to meet as often as possible and if she’s not busy, she’ll be at our gatherings, listening to our memories and being happy as hell that we are creating new ones.
My wish for all of you that knew Bird and are grieving as hard as me, know this, she is in a far better place that we. I will miss her oddball texts that normally had me responding with ‘huh’ because I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what shes trying to say. I will miss her giggles which remained exactly the same as they were since we were kids. I will miss her devilish eyes and rosy cheeks when she’s had a few. I will miss her checking in on me when she knows Im going through a tough time. I will miss her entirely. My buddy. My friend. My soul sister. ttul xoxo

My days working with Bridget at LCBO whether it was Rodney, Glencoe or Thamesville were the BEST! She made me laugh and we worked well as a team. We called ourselves the dream team when we worked together. Her way with customers, her smile and her big heart is like no other I have met. My heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to you and all your family during this extremely difficult time. Words cannot express how much Bridget was loved by many and will be deeply missed. Bridget was truly a unique person and loved by so many. Bird always put her family and friends first, she loved them dearly and unconditionally with her beautiful heart of gold. Bird was the person that could take a gloomy day and make it full of sunshine with her words, smile, laugh and amazing sense of humor.
I am truly honoured and blessed to have had Bridget as an amazing and wonderful friend over the many, many years. So many great memories I cherish from: crop touring while listening to our favorite music; mission nights; girl’s nights, endless hours spent drinking coffee, talking and laughing; hanging out at Jammers; helping out occasionally at flowers shop; sitting at the Howse family kitchen table playing cards until all hours of the night into early mornings; laughing so hard our stomachs would hurt and tears were rolling down our faces; the list goes on and on. Over the years as our lives may have taken slightly different paths, and although we may not have always seen each other or talked as often as we use to, when we did it was like no time had passed and we always knew we were there for each other.
Words cannot express how much you will be truly missed my dear and beautiful Friend. Thank you for all your love, amazing good times and endless treasured memories. Love you always and forever our beautiful Bird, and until we meet again you are always in my heart and thoughts.

My dearest condolences to Bridget's family. Bridget and I have been friends for a very long time and Bridget has been by my side through some of the toughest times in my life. Always checking in on everyone else and never complaining about what she was going through. I sure will miss her texts phone calls, walks, drives,voice, funny facebook posts, laugh and her unselfish way she had for helping anyone she could. Her heart was so big and she loved her family and friends with everything she had.

Bridget had so many dear friends when you met Bridget you instantly had a connection with her Bridget’s inviting smile, incredible one of a kind laugh, positive energy and zest for life was contagious. So many memories rush back to me of Bridget!
That crazy little shit, damn we had some incredible times together, Oh my lord, i remember, all of us in the smoking area at school. I was the only one not a smoker lol She had me hold her cigarette and of course, I would get holster at from the teachers for not being in the cement. The many times we went cruising down the huge metropolis of West Lorne, music cranked, hooting at friends, and oh and the egg fights, whipping raw eggs at each others cars. Sorry Marvin. Her 16th birthday party.
Then driving around the circle at WESES and WESS spinning the wheels,, I can still hear her saying OH SHIT there's the principle.
I moved a while back but every time I was back in the area and I would see Bird, and it was Hey bird! Hey Bean! That infectious laugh. Bridget really was the glue that held a bunch of friendships together. She was there to cheer me up in some of my darkest hours, she just knew. I opened my year books, and a quote she always wrote me, seems only fitting for her!
